Password Protect a PDF

Add AES-256 encryption and a password to a PDF.

Protect PDF adds a password to your PDF file so only people who know the password can open or edit it. ConvertDa's free Protect PDF tool uses 128-bit AES encryption — strong enough for most business and personal use cases. Set the password and download the secured file in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What encryption is used?

AES-256, the strongest standard supported by the PDF specification.

How strong is the encryption?

128-bit AES is the standard used by most enterprise PDF tools. It is computationally infeasible to brute-force without the password, provided the password itself is strong (12+ characters mixing letters, numbers, and symbols).

Can I set different passwords for opening and editing?

Yes. The 'open' password restricts who can view the file. The 'permissions' password restricts editing, printing, and copying. Set either or both.

What happens if I lose the password?

We do not store passwords and cannot recover them. Save your password in a password manager before sharing the protected file.
